Couple Lucky to Escape Toxic Smoke in Blaze

A DUNDEE couple were “extremely lucky to have survived” after their Lochee home was swamped by toxic smoke following a blaze, a senior fire officer said yesterday. Paul Markie and his wife Jacqueline were rushed to hospital when the fire broke out in the bedroom of their two-storey semi-detached home in Eastwell Road just after 7.30pm on Saturday.

Race Award a Tribute to Tragic Jan

WHAT WOULD have been the 20th birthday of tragic jockey Jan Wilson has been marked today with the announcement of an award in the Forfar rider’s name. The memorial fund set up by Jan’s parents has joined the Pony Racing Authority (PRA) to establish an award for teenagers who share the apprentice’s dream of a career in the saddle.

 

Driver is Cut Free in Crash Drama

A 42-year-old man had to be cut free from his car by firefighters today following a collision in Fintry in Dundee (write Graeme Strachan and Jennifer Cosgrove). The man’s 19-year-old daughter also received minor injuries as a result of the incident, which occurred at the junction of Fintry Road and Finella Terrace just after 11 am.

The two firefighters killed while tackling a blaze in Southampton are the latest casualties of a dangerous profession. James Shears, 35, and Alan Bannon, 38, of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, died while tackling a fire at a high-rise block of flats on Tuesday. All the residents were rescued.

A YOUNG thrill-seeker tragically died yesterday after he was thrown from his canoe while trying to tame some of the River Tay’s most turbulent rapids. The watersports enthusiast, who has not been named but is believed to be around 19, was negotiating a popular stretch of water at Lower Grandtully when disaster struck.
