Perth Community Fire Station
Perth Community Fire Station, which is situated on Longcauseway, was opened in October 1971 by the Perth and Kinross Lord Provost David K Thomson, superseding the previous station in King Edward Street. The station covers the city of Perth, which has a population of approximately 45 000, and also some surrounding towns and villages.
The station is staffed by 72 full time firefighters, who crew a rescue pump, a water tender ladder, an aerial recue pump and a prime mover, which operates in conjunction with a heavy rescue unit and a hazardous materials unit. The role of these firefighters and other members of the Community Safety department is to reduce the risk to the people, property and the environment in and around Perth from fire, road traffic collisions and other emergencies. This is done through prevention and community engagement activities, which are backed up by responding to emergencies promptly and effectively when they occur. Perth Community Fire Station is also the home to Tayside Fire and Rescue’s Training and Development Centre. Working in the Community Safety and Training departments of the organisation are a mixture of uniformed and non-uniformed staff, providing fire and community safety advice to businesses and members of the public and training and development of Tayside Fire and Rescue personnel respectively.
Perth sits on the banks of the River Tay in the Scottish Lowlands. It has a compact city centre, which is flanked by two large and open public parks – the North and South Inches. The city carries a strong sense of history, with many buildings in the city centre being Georgian and Victorian styled. In contrast to this, however, there are also large residential areas, including more recent developments. As well as the industrial, commercial and residential premises that you would expect to find in any city, Perth also has a harbour and an airfield at Scone. It is also generally considered to be the hub of Scotland’s road network, with the Broxden Junction allowing access to every major city in Scotland.
