Macalpine Road Fire Station (wholetime)
Built in 1991, Macalpine Road Fire Station is located just off the Kings Cross Circus Junction of the A90 Kingsway. It replaced the old station which was known as the Northern Fire Station previously situated on Strathmore Avenue, approximately one mile away from the new station. The station covers thirteen local Council Wards within Dundee and three in Angus.
Macalpine Road Fire Station has a rescue pump, a water tender ladder, a heavy rescue unit and an aerial ladder platform and is staffed by 72 full time firefighters. The staff is the main asset and in addition to responding to emergencies they undertake a range of Community Safety activities that are primarily aimed at preventing deaths and injuries in fires. Staff at Macalpine form half of Tayside Fire and Rescue’s urban search and rescue capability utilising the Heavy Rescue Unit based here.
The geographical area served by Macalpine is both urban and rural. The urban area includes a number of industrial estates and a large residential area to the north of Dundee reflecting the wide variety of socio-economic groups residing within individual neighbourhoods, which can be linked to the risk of dwelling fires occurring within the area. There is a great deal of new development being undertaken in the Macalpine area, with estates such as Ardler being demolished and replaced by new housing. There is a large retail shopping centre in the station area and the football stadiums, Dens Park and Tannadice. The rural area covered by the station includes a large farming community and numerous small towns and villages.
